Creative Arts Consulting FAQ page

Q: How much do you charge for your sessions?
A: For first time clients, I offer a FREE 1/2 hour phone consultation upon request so we can get to know each other before we meet for the first time. After that, there are two different hourly rates for consulting sessions: If we meet at your studio or at a mutually agreed upon location in the Seattle or Eastside areas (aka: a coffee house) it’s $95/hour.  If you are not in the Seattle are and/or prefer to speak via phone it’s $75/hour. Whatever is most convenient for you! (First time appointments are 1 hour to 2 hours long depending on your needs. Follow-up appointments are scheduled for a minimum of 1 hour per session.)

Q: I am only available on weekends – will you meet with me?
A: Yes! I am happy to meet you anytime during the week in the afternoon or evening and will gladly make time for a weekend appointment if that works best for your schedule.

Q: What if I don’t want to meet at my home but don’t necessarily want to drive to Seattle?
A: I am happy to meet at a local coffee shop or other location for the same price as an appointment at your home / studio ($95/hr), as long as they don’t mind that we sit for a time while we discuss your business.

Q: How does your service differ from a regular business consultant?
A: My specialty is providing caring and supportive mentoring for artists and craft makers of product-based businesses that ultimately helps them reach their goals of making a living doing what they love.

When we meet for the first time, I’ll ask a lot of questions about your business and what you’d like to accomplish and listen carefully to your answers before offering you the tools you’ll need to begin working in that direction.

The ideas we discuss may come about during our discussions about pricing, craft show selling, display and/or photography, product development or moving toward a wholesale business model. We might also delve into more emotion-based blocks like fear of failure or success, apprehension with change and dealing with rejection. During our time together, I offer you my views and guide you through the sometimes difficult choices that will ultimately help you reach your goals. My advice is honest and sometimes difficult to hear but is always offered compassionately with your best interest in mind.

Q: How does your service differ from a “life coach”?
A: In my opinion, the most significant difference is that after an appointment with me, the follow through and accountability for the things we discussed is entirely in your hands and on your timetable, allowing you the space you need to find your own path toward growth without the shadow of expectations that can halt the creative process. I promise to be right here for you when you are ready to address new issues but will normally refrain from “checking up” on you too often. Over the years I have found this open-ended consultation style to be very effective and much less stressful for my creative minded clients. I think it just might work for you too!

Q: Okay, but what I really wanted to know is if you would help me set up my Quickbooks (accounting) software / file my copyright paperwork / be my sales rep?
A: I can help you understand what you need to know in order to set up your accounting / file paperwork /develop a sales strategy, however I do not offer services to do these things for you. If you are specifically looking for help in these areas, I recommend consulting with an accountant / bookkeeper/ lawyer and/or sales representative.

Q: What kind of businesses and/or mediums have you worked worked with?
A: I specialize in working with creative small business owners who have a product to sell, whether tangible (like handmade items) or intangible (like music lessons). I have helped many different types of business owners over the years: Music teachers, 2D artists, artists sales representatives, craft makers, functional artists, jewelry makers, pattern designers – just to name a few.

By helping many different types of creative business owners, I’ve found that the main information on building a successful creative business is very much the same across the board!

We can focus on branding your business, pricing your work or services, pushing past the blocks that keep you from the next level of success, figuring out what that next level is, or anything else that you’d like to discuss about your business.

While I am confident that I can help you find the focus you need to grow your business, if we find that during our initial emails and/or phone discussion that I am not the right consultant for your business, I will absolutely suggest  another consultant / coach that would be a better fit. After all, my main goal is to help you find your ultimate success with your business!

Q: I saw elsewhere on your site that you also teach photography and jewelry making. Are there other services you can offer during our appointments?
A: During our sessions, I am happy to offer my expertise in the following areas:

  • – Small object photography (using your own digital camera)
  • – Opening and running an Etsy shop (hands-on sessions to open up and improve your shop are available)
  • – Basic Etsy banner and avatar design (using your photos or photos I take for you of your work)
  • – Brand, identity and logo concept development (preparing to work with a graphic designer)
  • – Retail and wholesale catalog development (creating catalogs, product line-sheets and online catalogs)
  • – Jewelry technique improvement (from beading to metalsmithing)

Q: Okay, I’m ready and want to set up an appointment with you. What do I do now?
A: Great! You are welcome to get a full overview on the process at my Let’s Get Started! page or simply Contact me today!

I’ll email you a simple quick questionnaire to help me get to know the basics of you and your goals before our first meeting. Then, we’ll make an appointment to speak on the phone for your (optional) FREE 1/2 hour phone evaluation. After we speak, you may choose to continue on our call for a 1 to 2 hour first appointment or we can make arrangements for a full appointment at a later date.

When we both agree to work together to improve your business, we’ll schedule your first appointment for 1 to 2 hours depending on your needs (not including your free 1/2 hour).

Bring anything you’d like me to see during our sessions – lists of questions, samples of your past or current work, websites of artists and/or products you love and anything else you want to share. The more I know about you, the more productive our sessions will be!
